Day Trip #11Unforgettable Overnight

Sleep In A...

Lodging can make or break a vacation, but staying somewhere truly unique -- a Grain Bin overlooking the number 8th green or overlooking the water and prairie landscape, an old school, or even spending the night in a historic Carnegie Hall -- can turn a humdrum into an unforgettable trip.

Bills Cabin Grain BinBills Cabin - Grain Bin

If you're looking to put a little farm in your city stay check out the Grain Bin in Primghar. You won’t find a bed in a corner at “Bill’s Cabin” either, even though it sleeps 4 people. Matter of fact, there are no corners in this very well decorated “condo” overlooking the number 8 green.

Dog Greek Bin Cabins

Choose between "Corn" or "Beans" for your glamping get away.

Each cabin has six sets of queen sized beds that comfortably sleep twelve people.  The cabins include electricity, microwave, standard sized refrigerator, stove, sink in kitchen, kitchen table with seating for six, couch, two arm chairs, TV with cable, heat, and air conditioning.  The upper level includes 2 bedrooms which are open to the living space below.  The cabins also have a handicap accessible bathroom with complete facilities including a walk in shower.  Three picnic tables (one handicapped accessible) and one fire ring with grill are provided on the patio.

These new bin shaped cabins are located on Dog Creek South at the end of the cul-de-sac. Both cabins have an incredible view of the lake.  This improvement to the already popular Dog Creek Park is reaching a growing group of outdoor recreation users who are interested in spending time outdoors but may not own or want travel with extensive equipment.

Sanborn Carnegie Library

Sanborn's Carnegie Library was built in 1911 and then remodeled in 1964dd a children's library in the basement.  In 2007 the Preservation society leadership made the bold choice to move the structure, and work with other business leaders in finding a new home for the building. Today, the structure is down the street and around the corner about two blocks from its original location at W. 2nd Street.

Willoway Complex School

This facility is now called Willoway Complex and no longer Sutherland Consolidated School. The community of Sutherland is proud to have stepped up and preserved this 1921 three story school building. The inside of the Willoway complex has changed very much. It now holds an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, activity room, kitchen, 17 senior (55+) independent apartments and 2 classrooms have been remodeled for overnight lodging, using as many original materials as possible giving it a modern aesthetic.

If one walks the corridors of this historic building you will see some memories of the school building and if you quietly listen, one may even hear the conversation of students and teachers of the past.
